Are you a fitness fanatic? Do you spend hours in the gym building those sturdy biceps and working those muscles out? Well, if your answer is in the affirmative, you are in for a surprise. Rumor is it that a heart rate monitor is one of the best ways to make the most out of your workout.

Numerous trainers have been found insisting on using heart rate monitors with their clients and many athletes swear by these monitors.

What Is A Heart Rate Monitor?

As simply as the name suggests, a heart rate monitor is a personal monitoring device that measures and displays your heart rate. It continuously records and tracks your heart rate and allows you to measure it in real time.

Typically used during training and working out, a heart rate monitor provides instant feedback on how well you are performing and how hard you are working out. In doing so, these monitors help you make necessary adjustments and changes get the most out of your exercise regimen.

The electrode sensors attached with the monitor detect every single heartbeat of yours and then transmit all these measurements to different receivers like a phone app, watch or a fitness wearable. This data is exhibited through the number of beats that occur per minute.

Why Do You Need A Heart Rate Monitor?

While a heart rate monitor isn’t an absolute necessity for anyone, they can be incredibly useful and are a great way to see where you stand in terms of your exertion levels. They help perfect and fine-tune your exercise program and are also often believed to be great motivational tools.

Here are some convincing reasons why getting a heart rate monitor for yourself is a good idea.

1. Continuous Tracking

Compared to a simple pulse monitor which displays values at a single point, a heart rate monitor tracks and records your heart rate on a continuous-basis while you are exercising. This prevents you from the hassle of having to stop amid your exercise regime and take your pulse in order to assess how intensely you are working out.

2. Detects your Heart Rate Zone

Every time you begin exercising, you are likely to set a target heart rate for maximum impact. A target heart rate is the rate at which you want to keep working out in order to reap the maximum benefits from your workout session. A heart rate monitor helps you stay within your desired target zone and gives visual or audible alerts when you are going below or above that rate. This helps you make the required adjustments by speeding up or slowing down to align with your target zone.

3. Helps Vary Exercise Routine

Heart rate monitors help you remain challenged and motivated throughout your workout by letting you vary your exercise routine. It does this by tracking the intensity of your workout through which you can check your pulse through the entire course of your exercise. This helps you tailor your exercises according to your goals and assess where you need high exercise heart rates or lower exercise heart rates.

4. Measures Overall Well-Being

A heart rate monitor displays heart rate variability which is a measure of the inconsistency in the length of time between your heartbeats. It also detects fluctuations in your heart rate in that occur in response to various internal and external stressors. This not only helps you keep your physical health in check but also your mental and emotional health.

It is very important to know the value of your heart rate which is an important measure of your heart health and overall fitness level. It is also imperative for you to invest in authentic and genuine machines for your body which you can get from trusted suppliers like Universal Medical Supplies.

A Guide for Buying the Right Wheelchair

February 9, 2019

Accidents happen all the time and sometimes they affect our ability to walk. Luckily, there are a number of different types of wheelchairs that can still help you move around. However, buying the right wheelchair is not as simple as you may have imagined.

There are a number of things that you must consider in order to buy a wheelchair that suits you the best and fulfills all your requirements. Scroll down to read about the 3 most important factors that you need to consider while buying a wheelchair.

1. The Width of the Seat

The first thing that you must consider while purchasing a wheelchair is the width of the seat. Generally, the width of the seat cannot be adjusted. Therefore, it is important to look for a chair that can fit the particular requirements of the individual who will use it.

If you are purchasing it for a child, it is advisable to look for a wheelchair with a smaller seat width. On the other hand, if the wheelchair is for a heavier, bulkier adult, the seat should be much wider. Generally, 16 inches, 18 inches, and 20 inches are the standard seat widths for most wheelchair models. However, you can find wheelchairs offering seat width of up to 30 inches.

2. Seat to Floor Distance

Seat to floor height is an important factor that must be considered when it comes to buying a wheelchair. If the seat is too low, the user will not feel comfortable and their feet may even touch the ground. On the other hand, if the seat is too high, the feet of the user may remain hanging in the air!

In order to avoid such uncomfortable situations, it is important to find a wheelchair with just the right seat depth. Buy a wheelchair that fits the requirement of the particular user. For example, for people who propel themselves by using their feet, it is advisable to go for a wheelchair that offers a seat to floor height that is lower than the presumed height of the user.

3. Backrest Height

While the height of the backrest can be extended using optional accessories, it is still a good idea to buy a wheelchair having a suitable back height. You can easily gauge the back height of the wheelchair. All you need to do is measure the distance from the top of the backrest to the bottom of the seat of the wheelchair.

Make sure the backrest is long enough to comfortably support the back of the user. At the same time, it should not be too long otherwise the head of the user will keep bumping into it.

Remember buying wheelchairs is not an everyday task. It is important to take your time to choose the right kind of wheelchair to ensure maximum comfort and mobility. Make sure you buy only from trusted contractors like Universal Medical Supply to get the best wheelchairs at the most affordable rate.

Taking Care After an Orthopedic Surgery

November 19, 2018

Preparing for an orthopedic surgery can be an increasingly daunting task, but knowing that a team of experienced professionals is going to look after you is likely to alleviate your worries and concerns.

However, it doesn’t just end there. Once the surgery is done and you are discharged from the hospital, there are a number of important things and post-surgery care information you should thoroughly understand in order to ensure the success of your orthopedic surgery.

This information will help you take care of yourself after your surgery and ensure a smooth and speedy recovery process.

Wound Care

While you are recovering on your own at home, it is imperative for you to look after your wound in order to prevent it from worsening and also to avoid any infection. It is very important to keep the wound area dry and clean. After being discharged post-surgery, make sure to change the dressing of your wound every once in a while, or as per your doctor’s instruction. This helps prevent any sort of infection or contamination from the wound. Also ensure that you replace the dressing with a clean, dry gauze because a dirty gauze can also increase the risk for infections and further illnesses.

Proper Diet

This goes without saying, any surgery be it minor or major, will require you to follow a proper diet to fasten up the recovery and healing process. Resume your normal diet, unless you have been instructed otherwise, and make sure to include loads of all the essential vitamins and minerals that your body needs for healthy functioning. Your doctor may also advise you to take additional iron and vitamin supplements, depending on your needs. You also need to incorporate plenty of fluids in your diet to help with the healing.

Exercising

Following an orthopedic surgery, you are likely to be given a tailored exercise program by your surgeon or your physical therapist. This exercise program is always outlined according to the surgery done and your body’s needs and requirements. Exercising is vital because it helps ensure a speedy recovery process by enhancing your physical abilities and performance. It will also improve your endurance levels and greatly reduce the stress on the surgical areas. In some cases, your doctor may even prescribe a physical therapist to visit you at home who will assist you in the recovery process.

Learn More

Medication

You must take all medications according to your doctor’s instructions and prescriptions. Because many medicines come with adverse side effects, it is extremely important to take them as directed. Your doctor may also give you antibiotics to stop any bacterial infection from developing in the treated area. Make sure to talk to your doctor about all medications prescribed to you so that you are well-informed on their side effects and other relevant information.

One cannot emphasize on the importance of post-surgery care enough, as it is extremely vital and an absolute necessity. Not looking after yourself and caring for the treated areas can adversely affect your chances of recovery. You must also ensure that you invest in quality and authentic post-care equipment, if any, to assist you in the healing process.

ECG Monitor

An Electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor is a device that measures and checks the electrical activity of your heart. It records the heart’s activity and rhythm through a strip of paper that moves on a line on a screen. By measuring the electrical current running through our heart, the device helps us know if our heart is working normally as it should, or not. An ECG can also screen and diagnose different cardiac problems, allowing us to check if our heart is healthy. This makes it an incredibly useful device for people who constantly monitor their heart health.

Blood Pressure Monitor

One of the easiest ways to regularly check your blood pressure at home is through an automated blood pressure cuff. These devices have a digital monitor attached with them that records your blood pressure and displays the readings on a screen.

You can also use a sphygmomanometer, which is also referred to as a blood pressure gauge or a blood pressure meter. It consists of an inflatable cuff which first collapses the artery under it and then releases it in a controlled manner. Along with the cuff, it also has a manometer which helps record the pressure of your blood.

Blood Glucose Device

If you have diabetes, you probably have to check your blood glucose levels several times a day. This can be quite painful and uncomfortable because the standard way of checking the level of glucose in blood requires you to prick your finger with a lancet. It can be quite a hassle to do it many times a day. However, modern-day technology has come up with various apps and devices through which you can check your blood glucose levels without having to use a needle.

One of these is a blood glucose device, which you can easily and effortlessly use at home. There are several kinds of devices. Some of them use a small sensor patch that you have to place on your arm. The patch basically picks up glucose levels present in the fluid between your cells that are right under your skin.

You can check the measurement readings by using a reading device or through an app on your phone. A blood glucose device simply allows the patient to monitor their glucose levels without doing a blood test.

Must-Have Wound Care Supplies for Your First Aid Box

November 15, 2018

Accidents and injuries can occur anytime without warning, and a well-stocked first aid box is what you will need first and foremost. It is your one and only survival gear for situations that require immediate medical attention, be it at home or while you are travelling.

It is imperative for you to have a ready-to-use first aid kit at all times, with all the essential items that would assist you when dealing with a sudden medical emergency.

Here are some must-have wound care supplies that should always be a part of your first aid box.

1. Antiseptic Wash

The next best thing to soap and water for cleaning wounds is an antiseptic wash that helps remove all the dirt particles from a wound. It is basically a pain-relieving liquid that kills germs, prevents infections, and alleviates the pain caused by scrapes, cuts, bruises, and burns. The ideal way to use it is to apply a moderate amount on the affected area and cover it with a sterile bandage.

2. Scissors

Scissors can often come in very handy especially when you have to bandage a wound. It can be used for various purposes like cutting medical tape, trimming a gauze pad, or removing the excess of a bandage. It is best to invest in a pair of curved medical scissors which are safer and easier to use than the regular scissors that you might have at home.

3. Gauze Pads

These are possibly one of the most essential medical care items that you must always have in your aid box. It is one of the most widely and commonly used wound care dressing and is made from a bleached white cotton, polyester or rayon fabric. Gauze pads are used to cover a wound and stop it from bleeding, particularly when adhesive bandages don’t work.

4. Adhesive Medical Tape

Also referred to as band-aid, these medical tapes are used when dealing with minor injuries like scrapes, blisters and cuts. It is basically a flexible sheet of material, sticky on one side with an absorbent pad attached to it. They help protect the wound from further damage, dirt and friction. These tapes come in various shapes and sizes but the butterfly shaped ones are ideal to use since they manage to hold two sides of a wound together perfectly.

5. Instant Cold Packs

Much to your surprise, instant cold packs are the new in thing and are the best substitutes for ice. Since you can’t possibly carry ice with you everywhere, these packs are a life-saver in times when you need to ice a wound to decrease swelling or ease any itching coming from bites and stings. What makes them ‘instant’ is that they turn icy when you shake or bend the pad. However, you should have plenty of those in your kit because they aren’t reusable and should be disposed after the first use.

Page title

6. Antibiotic Ointment

These ointments are mostly used to apply on a wound before covering it with a gauze pad or an adhesive bandage. They are applied directly on a wound to stop the bacteria from growing and spreading the infection any further.

You should always check these supplies for expiration dates and ensure they are sterile and clean. As they say, safety first and prevention is always better than cure. Also, invest in good-quality medical equipment and supplies which you can get from trusted suppliers like Universal Medical Supply Store.

Wheelchair

October 23, 2018

Throughout the development of the medical industry, one of the most common medical devices used is the wheelchair. Equipped to provide easy transportation for individuals with physiologically related issues, injuries, and disabilities. A wheelchair can propel the patient from one place to another with wheels. Composed of either three or four wheels, wheelchairs stabilize the patient even through rugged terrain. Additionally, there are variety of wheelchairs that fit the specific needs of the patient such manual wheelchairs and electronically motorized wheelchairs. With manual wheelchairs, the patient can propel themselves by using the big wheels or by the assistance of another individual through the handles behind the seat. However, the use of an electronically motorized wheelchair, the experience is much easier! By simply using the operational hand gear, located on the armrest of the wheelchair, the patient can rotate and make simple turns with just the use of a hand. In addition, the speed of the wheelchair is easily adjusted to the comfort level of the patient.

I have encountered many cases throughout my medical journey that wheelchairs are a highly recommended option for people suffering from a variety of injuries such as broken bones, sprains, and fractures. However, there are times when crutches and walking boots don’t feel comfortable anymore and the patient wants to try something new to relieve the pain. That’s when a wheelchair would be your best option! For patients suffering from knee or ankle injuries or just resting your feet, utilizing the footrest available will become your best friend! With standard swing away to elevated footrest, both options will satisfy the patients based on their condition. Patients that simply need to rest their feet, the swing away footrest will be the best! On the other hand, the elevated footrest is more efficient for patients suffering from knee or ankle injuries or need elevation for swelling problems. Furthermore, the elevated footrest can be adjusted by pulling the handle located next to the footrest while pushing the footrest to the desired degree of comfort.

With the help of our medical staff, we provide you quick and easy tips to help you utilize your wheelchair its full potential! Feel free to visit our store at 105 N. Greenville Avenue Allen, Tx 75002 or our website @ www.universalmedicals.com to see the variety of options we carry for wheelchairs and wheelchair related products!
